I often get asked the question – “how can I lose weight fast?”
I understand that there are times when you just feel like you need to shift some weight! You may be motivated by a specific event coming up or just had enough of feeling uncomfortable in your clothes.
Can calorie counting help you lose weight?
You will have often seen me say or write about the fact that I don’t do calorie counting!
Counting calories can be flawed because…….
Not all calories are created equally. For example, a donut and a chicken breast can have the same number of calories but the nutrients they contain are very different.
Calories are a measure of energy so when your aim is weight loss it would seem sensible to focus on reducing your calorie intake.
In theory you need to eat fewer calories than you burn. Any excess calorie intake is stored in the body as fat!
A calorie is a calorie – or is it?
Science has confirmed several caloric components of food differ from others. For example, the “thermic effect of food” (TEF) is that some nutrients require calories to be metabolised. They can slightly increase your metabolism, just by eating them.
For example, when you metabolise protein you burn more calories than when you metabolise carbohydrates.
Proteins and carbohydrates both have 4 calories/gram; but, the TEF of protein = 15–30%; and the TEF for carbohydrates = 5–10%.
Here’s another example of a calorie not being a calorie.
Different fats are metabolised differently. Medium chain triglycerides (fats) (MCTs) have the same 9 calories/gram that other fats do; but they’re metabolised by the liver before getting into the bloodstream and therefore aren’t utilised or stored the same way as other fats.
Calories cause weight gain, and fewer calories are the path to weight loss – right?
Calories are important for weight loss. If you eat and absorb a load more than you use, then your body’s wisdom will store some for later. Calories matter.
But they are not the “be-all and end-all” of weight loss; they’re important, but they’re the symptom, not the cause. Let’s think about the reasons people eat more calories. Let’s focus on the causes.
People eat too many calories, not because they’re hungry, but because they feel sad, lonely, or bored. Or maybe because they’re tired or stressed. Or maybe even because they’re happy and celebrating.
And all these feelings interact with our gastrointestinal, nervous and hormonal systems; all of which influence our calorie intake.
So, what do you do if you want to lose weight?
We know from the above that calorie counting can help you to lose weight. We also know that the types of foods you choose (calories) are important.
So……………drum roll!!!!
My 21 Day Weight Loss Programme
I have been asked by so many of you for a short-term (nutrient dense) weight loss plan that maximises your fat loss without compromising your health or taste buds!!
This is exactly what I’ve written for you.
This plan is very different to how I usually work. As I’ve said I’m not usually one to count calories or even measure out ingredients when I’m helping a person with their long-term health.
However, so many of you want to shift some weight because you have an event coming up or you just want to kick start a new healthy life by seeing immediate results.
I wanted to give you a healthy way to lose weight in the shortest possible time but in a way that supports your health, changes your habits and allows you to keep the weight off at the end of the 21 days!
Of course, it is a healthy plan and my focus has been on providing you with a diet that maximises your weight loss but also boosts your nutrients.
In order to do this, I’ve had to be precise about the exact ingredients, weights and calories.
You will not be hungry on this plan.
It is set out so that you know EXACTLY what to eat at each meal. It includes snacks – even some chocolate is allowed! All recipes and shopping lists are given for each 7 days to make things easy for you.
If there are ingredients you do not like I’ve included a swap list. Simply swap any ingredient for the exact amount given in the table.
I have included both vegetarian and meat-eating options.
For many of you, body confidence comes from feeling good in your own skin and weight plays an important part.
Seeing some immediate results will help to motivate you.
I must tell you though that mindset is also key to your success. You need to work on the inside out so please be kind to yourself, love yourself as you are, be grateful for all you bring to the world and remember that the number on the scales is only your relationship with gravity.
You are not missing out on anything whilst on this programme. You are not depriving yourself, starving yourself or being miserable for the next 21 days.
This is your opportunity to achieve your weight loss goal and feel confident for whatever event you have coming up.
