You may have seen a recent news story (full article here) where a Harvard professor slated the use of coconut oil and even suggested it’s a poison and the worst food you could have.
First of all, I think it’s completely ridiculous to use the term ‘poison’ when referring to a completely natural food. It’s no wonder we have lost our way with food when someone in this position is calling coconut poison!!!
I agree with Lucy Bee that these kind of statements cause fear and unease amongst the general public and adds to the amount of conflicting information with regards to food.
I think we are all aware that coconut oil contains high levels of saturated fats, but it also contains a whole host of awesome nutrients that we know benefit our health.
Do you know anyone who is consuming vast quantities of this stuff? When it is used in recipes or cooking a very small amount is added.
Using coconut oil in this way is not going to kill anyone.
It is important to include fats as part of a healthy balance diet. In fact, we know that the trend in reducing fats and following a low-fat diet has caused us to ingest more sugar and become bigger and more ill!!
Coconut oil contains a special type of fatty acid called a medium chain fatty acid. It also contains caprylic acid and lauric acid which we know are beneficial to our digestive health.
In fact, a recent study identified that consuming coconut oil on a regular basis did not increase LDL (the bad) cholesterol and increased the HDL (good cholesterol).
I will definitely continue to use coconut oil, olive oil, avocado, seeds, nuts and butter as part of my diet.
